Dr. Decker is visiting Boyne District Library as part of the Library of Michigan's 2009 "Michigan Notable Authors Tour." Decker wrote from his vast experience serving as medical superintendent at the hospital from 1953-1987. The book begins with the history of the asylum system in England and the general treatment of mental illness, and then narrows its focus on the asylum system in Michigan, and includes a comprehensive history of the Michigan Asylum for the Insane, later called the Kalamazoo State Hospital. Michigan Notable Books is designed to promote reading and raise awareness of Michigan's literary heritage. The program annually selects 20 of the most outstanding books published in that year - titles that are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary and cultural experience. Boyne District Library is located at 201 East Main St. in Boyne City. For more information, call 231-582-7861.
