    • Merlin Bird ID (by Cornell Lab of Orinthology): Bird guide with ability to identify birds by uploading a photo.
    • eBird (by Cornell Lab of Orinthology): Record your bird sightings to an international database.
    • BirdNet: Bird sound identification (by Stefan Kahl): Identifies birds by recording it’s call or song. *Android only. iPhone users can try Song Sleuth for free or Bird Song ID USA songs and calls for $4.99.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Northern Michigan photographer and videographer, Scott Castelein, got into birding in 2019 while visiting family in South Dakota. He bought a pair of binoculars and a birding field guide and headed out to the Fort Pierre National Grasslands. After witnessing a place he’d driven through many times before suddenly burst into life simply by taking the time to stop and watch, he unknowingly dove into a new world. Now, on every walk through the woods or drive past a field he sees abundant activity in places he once thought were still.

Since then, he has become active on eBird, an international online bird observation database, produced a video about Whitefish Point’s waterbird migration for Michigan Audubon and traveled around Michigan, South Dakota, and South Texas in search of birds. It seems for every interesting and new bird he finds, there is usually a greater story or even a new friend made along the way. He continues to find new ways to bring his passions of photography and birding together to dive deeper into the world of conservation photography.
