    Job Description
    Position Summary:
    Assists the Construction Manager in all aspects of construction activity and volunteer management.

    Education and Experience Requirements: 
    • 2+ years of residential construction experience (required) and a Michigan Builder’s License (preferred) or the ability to obtain a license within eighteen (18) months.
    • Ability to apply construction knowledge to scheduling, coordinating and regularly participating in general construction work activities.
    • Ability to plan, schedule, prioritize, coordinate, delegate and manage multiple work activities.
    • Ability to read and interpret standard residential construction blueprints and specifications.
    • Basic mathematical aptitude to calculate building measurements, quantities, etc.
    • Must complete OSHA training within the first 30 days of employment.
    Position Requirements: 
    The Lead Carpenter must have the communication skills needed to perform all hands-on construction tasks as assigned by the Construction Manager, the ability to provide positive and upbeat engagement and oversight of volunteers of all skill levels and abilities, and the ability to implement project management practices that support multitasking on several projects at once while maintaining organization and communication of project timelines. This is a salaried, full-time position that will often require evening and weekend hours.
    Field Work
    • Performs all hands-on construction tasks as directed by the Construction Manager including new home construction, home rehabilitation, home repairs and warranty work.
    • “Fixes” any construction task performed below acceptable standards by volunteers.
    • Notifies Construction Manager of building practices and material cost savings opportunities.
    • Assists in the supervision of all site preparation and layout.
    • Maintains site safety in accordance with OSHA regulations.
    • Assists in the supervision of job sites on each designated workday and works to ensure construction is accomplished in accordance with approved permits and plans.
    • Assists in training volunteers and Program Partners about construction tasks and safety measures.
    Volunteers and Partner Families
    • Assists in the training of all volunteers and leading “safety talks” at the beginning of each shift.
    • Assists in developing relationships with volunteers who may serve as volunteer Site Supervisors.
    • Treats Program Partners and volunteers with respect and dignity, always striving to make construction involvement a meaningful and positive experience resulting in repeat volunteering.
    Construction Administration
    • Maintains supply and tool inventories and submits supply orders to the Office Manager.
    • Initiate contractor bidding as assigned
    • Build relationships and communicate with suppliers
    • Research/solicit suppliers/contractors for donations or material/labor cost reductions and general Gift in Kind to lower construction and building overhead costs to the Affiliate
    • Assist office in maintaining accurate vendor/material supplier contact information
    Other Duties as Assigned by the Construction Manager
     
    Required Skills / Experience / Physical Requirements
    • Knowledge and experience in the construction/contracting business, especially as a carpenter or framer.
    • Team building a real plus.
    • Must be a good listener and be able to engage in well-considered discussions.
    • Must be willing to understand the big picture of the work done by NWMHFH and know that construction is only a part of the larger goal.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds.  Work will require climbing ladders, considerable standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching in awkward and tiring positions.
    Must pass Criminal Background Check and Sexual Offender Check
